Chapter 36
The Walk to Bremen
It was a long walk to Bremen, a tiny village where the Hall of Science protruded up from its center, its four stories dwarfing the surrounding small huts and cottages. The path had started euphorically for Mortuus and Darius. Each had enjoyed the fruits provided by Barak, and everyone was abuzz with Mortuus’ victory over the demon Elder. Everyone except, of course, Alcander, who was prodded along by his two guards; Alcander spent most of the time trying to explain that he had no idea Morpheus was a demon. Militus was so angry that he threatened to gag the ranting Alcander until they reached Bremen. To the great relief of all, Alcander finally conceded and remained quiet.
The soldiers who were escorting the group continued to ask question after question of Mortuus. All wanted to congratulate Mortuus on his victory, and they invited him to partake of their battle games, should he feel up to it at a later time. Mortuus replied that he had had all the battle games he could take outside the walls of Limbo, but he did thank them for their offer, saying it was an honor to be asked.
Socius filled in Mortuus and Darius about Benjamin. Benjamin was the chief scientist of Limbo, and had worked in the Hall of Science for many centuries. The Hall of Science was responsible for all of the agricultural and manufacturing development and processing. Benjamin, ever curious and always tinkering, had overseen many of the initial developments which led to making Limbo the green, beautiful countryside it had become; he was renowned for his work.
“Agriculture?” asked Darius. “What need have they here for growing foods in a large scale?”
“Not just foods,“ replied Socius, “but plants for dyes and regeneratives, and of course, wines. Some here have quite a taste for the foods, even though they do not hunger. It reminds them of their lives, mostly, and makes them feel normal. I, having been raised here, actually do hunger.”
“That is a slight understatement,” Militus chimed in jokingly. “The boy can eat! His appetite is legendary!” Barak laughed loudly at this.
“He is a growing boy, Militus,” added Barak. “No others have ever grown here. Socius is truly one of the many wonders of Hell.”
“What of earlier times?” asked Mortuus. “What existed here before the Hall of Science came to be?”
Militus answered, “It was darker, Mortuus. And these walls did not exist.”
Mortuus looked at the walls to his left and right. They were never far out of sight unless the group passed through a well treed section of path, but even then there were always peepholes that revealed more walls. It was a constant reminder to Mortuus that Hell was never far away.
“When I first arrived, there was little to separate us from the outside,” continued Militus, “The only benefit to being placed in Limbo was that we were not tormented. We could talk with each other, but always to the background noise and odor of Hell.”
“How did you get the walls built? They are so high.
